Italian ryegrass is a fast establishing, winter active ryegrass that is more persistent than annual ryegrass with varieties lasting 1-2 years or longer depending on seasonal conditions.
Italian ryegrass is most commonly sown for a high quality, short term winter crop that is used to provide multiple grazings in winter and spring.
It can also be over-sown into run down pastures to boost winter and early spring performance.
It is important to note that to get the most out of Italian ryegrass a regular fertiliser programme needs to be implemented.
Annual clovers such as persian and/or balansa are excellent options to sow as companion species when sowing an Italian ryegrass.
