Legumes are the perfect companion to grasses in a pasture as they offer a range of benefits both to the producer and livestock.  Legumes are often the first colonisers of cleared ground as they have the ability of taking nitrogen from the atmosphere and utilising it to produce plant growth and incorporating this into the soil for other species to utilise.  Grasses for example don’t have this ability and rely on legumes or nitrogen fertilisers for their requirements. Legumes are highly nutritious to livestock containing high levels of energy and protein.
